WinghamWingham is one of the original Manning Valley towns and dates from 1852. It remains an authentic country town of just 4,700 people, laid out around a village Common and running down to a restored river wharf from schooners and steamers transported the rich local agricultural produce to Sydney. The BANK and Tellers are located in the heart of town, facing the Common. Agriculture, particularly dairying and beef, are still the dominant surrounding land uses. The Manning Valley Historical Society has its main museum a short walk from The BANK and contains an outstanding collection of items, photos and documents which facinates young and old alike. The Historical Society has also designed a self-guided walking tour around some 20 heritage buildings and sites, which you can start from The BANK. A popular tourist attraction from the 1880s, Wingham Brush is a remnant of the vast riverine rainforest which stretched along the Manning River from Mount George to the sea. It was dedicated in 1909 for the 'Preservation of Native Flora and Public Recreation'. The Brush is a major maternity site for the Grey-headed Flying Fox. These can be seen sleeping from their roosts in magnificent Moreton Bay Fig trees via an extensive boardwalk.....again, just a short stroll from The BANK. BeachesOne of Wingham's great features is that, although very much a country town, it provides easy access to some excellent beaches. The closest, at just 30 minutes away, is that of Old Bar and one of the safest family beaches, complete with ocean swimming pool, is at Black Head, 40 minutes away. For a long walk on a typically empty beach, try Crowdy Head....a 45 minute drive to the North. Great fishing is to be had off all these beaches.
Plateau AttractionsJust a short drive from The BANK and you reach The Bulga, an elevated plateau still heavily forested. Attractions include Ellenborough Falls, the longest single drop waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere and the picturesque town of Comboyne. A circuit drive takes you on through to Wauchope and you can return via the coastal centres of Port Macquarie and Laurieton. Alternatively, head West and discover Gloucester , the Barrington Tops National Park and the Bushrangers Way.
